About the cover image
On the front cover is an engraving from the first edition of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer showing Tom and a certain innocent whitewashing a fence. The University of Iowa’s copy of this novel is a rare association item, for it was presented by Mark Twain to his daughter Clara. For a discussion of the bibliographical problems of this book and others by the author, see William B. Todd’s article in this issue.
