	<p>Personal address is a pervasive index of identities, relationships and culture that is of enduring interest to pragmatics research and theory (see Clyne, Norrby & Warren, 2009; Hughson, 2009, for recent work).  Sociolinguistic models of personal address proceed from a correlational perspective, in which choices among alternative address terms are centered on variation between the formal (V) and informal (T) second person pronouns.  Research in this tradition presumes relatively direct connections between specifiable situational variables, such as relative age, familiarity, and sex, and address term choices.  By contrast, the cultural perspective proceeds from the assumption that personal address reveals a unique system of norms and premises relevant to personhood and relationships that underlies  the social structure in which that system is enacted.</p>
<p>This presentation builds from a cultural perspective founded on Hymes’ (1962, 1972) conceptualization of speech communities and valued ways of speaking, developed further in speech codes theory (Philipsen, 1992, 1997; Philipsen et. al, 2005).  Specifically, I take the discursive force position – that cultural norms are connected to action by way of predictions and explanations of talk about norm-governed behavior – as the basis for exploring differentiation of intentions from interpretations of personal address.  I draw from previously published ethnographic fieldwork conducted in Colombia, as well as more recent data, to illustrate five possibilities for interpretation and evaluation of personal address behavior that diverges from expectation: ignorance, incompetence, innovation, transgression and resistance.</p>

	<p>Tanto como los aspectos morfológicos claves que distinguen las clases altas de las clases bajas en todos los dialectos del español, hay actos de habla claves que tienen el mismo efecto.   Las diferencias de normas culturales para el acto de tutear son indicaciones especialmente claras de la estructura lingüística por la cual se realizan y se mantienen la identidad de clase social y las distancias pertinentes a ella.   El presente trabajo es una exploración del tutear y de dos actos de habla que son estrechamente relacionados con el mismo:  coger/mostrar confianza y ponerse confianzudo.  Se basa en datos recolectados en un estudio etnográfico en Bogotá entre 1987 y 2002 por medio de observación participante, entrevistas tanto informales como estructuradas, análisis de conversaciones grabadas, y análisis de textos mediados.  Los propósitos de esta exploración son primero, para demostrar que los actos de habla establecen los limites de las clases sociales en Colombia y son usados para mantenerlas en una sociedad sumamente dividida por el nivel social.  Segundo, mostrar que el acto de habla con nombre cultural es un nivel de análisis excelente para investigaciones de la pragmática intracultural.</p>

	<p>While language switching among multilinguals has been studied in a wide variety of contexts, few attempts have been made to generalize or to integrate findings into useful communication theory. Since language switching is an important part of personal as well as group identity and since issues surrounding language identity are often a focal point of interethnic conflict, the speech act of switching language merits a more concentrated study. This can be accomplished through such techniques as ethnographic description, consisting of participant observation, interviewing, and breaching experiments; conversation analysis of bilingual interaction; and examination of communication behavior through literature. Such diverse methods of study, however, are only a first step. An approach is needed that can integrate research findings into a useful intercultural theory and that may also be incorporated into education training in the field. Such a research direction can be provided by frame analysis, which offers a set of terms that describe metacommunication through language and code switching, and by multiple analysis research which approaches a communication event from several diverse perspectives simultaneously.
