Abstract
We are all familiar with the graphics cards that control the monitor displays on our desktops and laptops. Since 2006, methods have been developed to use these devices for scientific computing. Even moderately priced graphical processing units (GPUs) are capable of executing dozens or even hundreds of calculations simultaneously, thus cutting computer run times by orders of magnitude. We have developed software that uses GPUs' capabilities to model data that is measured in space and time. We apply our software to the analysis of satellite images in order to assess changes in Iowa's vegetative patterns between the years 1981 and 2006.
