Characterizing the Nephroblastoma Overexpressed gene (NOV) in Xenopus laevis.

Cancer often involves molecular and cellular mechanisms also found during embryonic development. This research was conducted to determine the expression pattern and the functions in development of the Xenopus homologue of Nephroblastoma over-expressed (NOV), a human cancer-related gene. We analyzed the normal expression pattern of nov, which showed high levels of protein and mRNA expression in the outer ectoderm and notochord of the developing embryo. Interestingly, both over and under-expression of nov mRNA resulted in gastrulation and cell movement defects. Since gastrulation movements are controlled by non-canonical Wnt signaling, we are investigating the extent that Nov may inhibit these signals to control morphogenesis.

A Mixture of Identities: A Look at Zulu Nationalism in the Nazareth Baptist Church

The Nazareth Baptist Church in South Africa is a unique mixture of traditional Zulu religion and Christianity that has been combined to create a new religious movement. The church, which has a following of around 5 million people, has often been labeled as a Zulu nationalist movement. My research project examines this claim in the post-Apartheid era to see whether Zulu nationalism still runs strong in the church and to what extent it does. I also look at the question of identity, and whether followers primarily identify themselves by their racial, ethnic, or religious qualities.

The influence of lower facial projection on the mandibular curve of Spee in hominins and extant humans

The curve of Spee (COS), a concave arc from the mandibular condyles across the tooth occlusal surface, is important in orthodontics, and its presence has been noted in fossil hominins. We tested the hypothesis that COS’s configuration covaries with lower facial projection on a sample of Euro-Americans, African-Americans and hominins (total n=302, CMNH), using 3-D landmarks from the dentition and facial skeleton. Results showed that Euro-Americans exhibit, on average, a more pronounced curve and African-Americans a flatter occlusal surface. Hominins generally extended the variation in the African-American sample.

Promoting Consistent use of Distraction for Children Undergoing Medical Procedures in an Emergency Treatment Center (ETC)

Background and Aim: Although distraction is a widely accepted intervention for helping children cope with painful medical procedures, it’s not consistently used in some busy ETCs. Protocols are needed to ensure consistent use of a distraction coach, such as a staff member or family member, to help children cope with medical procedures in busy ETCs. The purpose of this project is to present an educational program to create awareness of children’s need for assistance during medical procedures and to reinforce the consistent use of effective distraction techniques.

Innovation: Following IRB approval, this program will be implemented in a large university based level I Trauma center with pediatric commitment. Over 50 staff nurses and 20 nursing assistants will be invited to participate. The program will be in the form of a PowerPoint that will demonstrate the appropriate use of distraction materials available (such as books, toys, and stuffed animals), as well as imbedded video clips demonstrating how distraction can be successfully implemented during procedures. The program will be available on the computers in the ETC to be viewed when participants have free time. Pre- implementation data will be collected by surveying ETC staff nurses and nursing assistants; the survey will include questions regarding whether distraction is being used, knowledge of distraction techniques, and barriers to the use of distraction. Post-implementation data will be collected two months after completion of the educational program and will include survey questions similar to the pre- implementation surveys; they will be used to evaluate the success of the educational program.

Evaluation: Frequencies will be used to compare pre and post data. It is expected that this program will increase the use of distraction and promote awareness regarding the need for consistent use of distraction to help children cope during medical procedures in the ETC. If successful, the educational program could be expanded to other hospitals and organizations for the purpose of quality improvement.
