About the Cover Image

Our cover art this year is by Jim Madden. The front cover image, which depicts a landscape inspired by thoughts of childhood summers spent alongshore, is a 9" by 12" oil on paper called Crucible 1996. Mr. Madden earned a B.Arch. from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1975 and practiced architecture in Portland, Oregon until 1987. While living in Bozeman, Montana from 1988 to 1992 he began painting landscapes and returned to school. He earned a BFA in painting from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1994 and an MA from The University of Iowa in 1996. In May 1997 he earned an MFA in painting from The University of Iowa and plans to return to Montana with his wife, Corinne. All works are in the collection of the artist and are reproduced with his permission.
