Abstract

Group technology aims at grouping machines into machine cells and parts into part families. Traditional methods of group technology are based on classification and coding systems. A more practical and cost-effective approach uses cluster analysis. Two formulations of the GT problem are frequently used; matrix formulation and mathematical programming formulation. This paper reviews numerous applications of models and algorithms in group technology. The computational experience with selected heuristics is reported.
