The Rhetorics of Agitation and Control Then and Now: Studies in Memory of Donovan J. Ochs
At the height of the 1960s, Donovan Ochs and John Waite Bowers began teaching a course at the University of Iowa on how to apply rhetorical analysis to social-political agitation. The course resulted in a book, The Rhetoric of Agitation and Control, that, with the help of additional authors, has gone through many editions. It was the first fruit of a sub-field devoted to study of social movements. The passing of Professor Ochs has afforded the contributors of this special of POROI an occasion to honor his memory and to look at the influential text that he, Bowers, and their collaborators produced. Edited by Bruce Gronbeck, the issue contains essays by John Waite Bowers, Jacqueline Schmidt, David Schulz, and Bruce Gronbeck.
