Abstract
Presents three seldom-examined Whitman passages on "Democracy" from an 1863 daybook and shows how their meaning and importance have been obfuscated historically by a series of editorial decisions concerning how they have appeared in print; goes on to closely examine these notes and offer suggestions about their role in Whitman's writing and thinking.
