Abstract

Suggests Whitman's problematic relationship to fiction, both as a writer of fiction and as a character in fiction, and discusses the fictional Whitman in works by Cameron Rogers, John Erskine, Elizabeth Corbett, Edith Wharton, William Carlos Williams, and others, with a focus on Whitman's often iconographic appearance in Civil War stories by William Douglas O'Connor, Fred Chappell, Chris Adrian, Allan Gurganus, and Richard Selzer.
