Abstract

Offers a close examination of the floriated font on the cover of the 1855 Leaves of Grass, compares that font to the font used on the title page, and discusses the significance of the way Whitman shaped the letters of his title; goes on to examine a Whitman poetry manuscript that unveils some otherwise disguised homosexual references in the poem eventually entitled "The Sleepers."
