About the cover image

The bookplate on the front cover was designed in the 1930s for John Martin, M.D. The shield at the top represents the arms of the MacDonald Clan, to whom Dr. Martin is related through his paternal grandmother. Each of the emblems is symbolic: the galley ship, for example, “indicates the Clan’s sovereignty over the Scottish western seas”; the severed hand is that of Donald. “Donald was a Scottish soldier on a galley which was repulsing invaders on the Isle of Skye, and the galley captain had declared that the warrior whose hand first touched the land would own the island forever. As the galley approached the beach-head, Donald severed his hand and tossed it onto the beach, thus securing the island in the name of the Clan.”
