Results are given of a detailed survey on point-of-use (POU) home water treatment devices, presented to a community of water resource experts. The survey focused on questions of regulation of the home water treatment industry. There was very strong support for mandatory controls by independent, third-party organizations to protect the public from possible dangers of ineffective equipment and misuse of promotional materials. Most respondents were against any subsidized support for the industry or for persons using the equipment. Since the conclusion of this research, several states have introduced or enacted legislation to set up regulation procedures of the POU water treatment industry.
