Abstract

My project aims to increase the interest in higher learning in STEM fields in pediatric patients through the implementation of ‘Science Nights’ at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital. Activities were carefully chosen so that children as young as 5 and as old as 16 years of age could participate with the median and target age of 9 to 11 years of age. The program included six science nights each of which highlighted one branch of STEM. These included a geology night in partnership with the Science Booster Club, an astronomy night in collaboration with physics students and more. With this project, I hope to provide an experience in which children can explore STEM in a hands-on and interactive way, by running the experiments themselves.
