In partnership with the Possibilities in Science: Knowledge for the Future Conference and the Iowa City STEAM festival, I developed a project that gave K-12 students from diverse backgrounds the opportunity to learn science from hands-on demonstrations. Students were able to build a model of a gene and understand its link to genetic diseases. Other students were taken through a genotyping demonstration, learning the complete process involved in determining the genetic make-up of a mouse model. The demonstrations were designed to make science simple and interesting to learn. The target audience was underrepresented minority students, and the goal was to inspire and motivate K-12 students from diverse backgrounds to pursue science in the future and increase diversity in science.
