About the Cover Image
Our front cover image reproduces 20th century Turkish cuvais, or storage bags from, the central Anatolian region of Karapinar. Almost always woven in pairs, these bags were used primarily for gathering brush. Tightly woven, they feature a simple pattern of alternating natural cream and brown wool. Of great interest is the use of felt between the bag face and the card-woven goat hair belt. Felt production, common in the region between Afyon, Konya, and Karapinar, has all but disappeared in Anatolia. These bags are from the collection of Keith Achepohl.
