Light shines through the cloth ladder to emulate a stained glass window as the audience enters the theater before the play starts. This is a dramatic set-up for the audience as the atmosphere is dark and forlorn as they would expect due to the source material, soon in farcical nature this is subverted as colorful festivities soon occur.
