Abstract

Identification of components of the Human Genome and their relevance to health and disease are major events which have made the incorporation of genetic information into the delivery of health care across all practice settings essential. Genetics is now recognized as an integral component of an increasing number of common disorders. This recognition is creating a shift in health care and management to more individualized diagnostic, surveillance, and risk reduction interventions tailored to each person's particular genetic makeup. In today's medicine, practitioners must be prepared to identify and effectively address individuals' genetic health concerns as they arise. The authors suggest one strategy to meet this goal, a collaborative clinical partnership between nurses and all health care providers in delivering genetic health care management.
